Third-seeded Novak Djokovic rolled into his sixth straight Grand Slam quarterfinal, defeating Mardy Fish in straight sets. Djokovic beat the 19th-seeded Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday. Djokovic converted 6 of 8 break points. Djokovic, the 2008 Australian Open champ from Serbia, has reached at least the semifinals at Flushing Meadows the last three years.

Monfils tops Gasquet to reach quarters (AP)

Gael Monfils beat countryman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 Monday to give France its first U.S. Open quarterfinalist in a decade. The 17th-seeded Monfils had never advanced past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament other than the French Open. He reached the semifinals there in 2008. Gasquet, ranked 38th, upset sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.

Cibulkova upsets erratic Kuznetsova (AP)

Two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova double-faulted 10 times and was upset by 45th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday. Cibulkova reached her first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows despite being treated by a trainer for a left leg problem between sets.

Patrick McEnroe resigned as U.S. Davis Cup captain after 10 years on Monday and will leave after the Americans’ playoff against Colombia this month. McEnroe led the United States to a Davis Cup title in 2007. But for the first time since 2005, the Americans must win in the playoffs to secure a spot in the top tier of the Davis Cup.

Australia’s Sam Stosur won the latest-finishing women’s match in U.S. Open history, erasing four match points and coming back to beat 2004 runner-up Elena Dementieva of Russia 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2) in the fourth round. There were 15 service breaks in the 2-hour, 38-minute match that officially ended at 1:35 a.m.
